20150521

I write too much for the time I have available. I might want to figure out a way to parlay this passion into a profitable endeavor.

I read theSkimm, so articles currently from that source. Will update when I branch out to my community, other sources, etc.

How does one less-initiated (sorry, Coach Carter, I know you tried) become initiated enough to speak to important issues?

Missed David Letterman while helping a friend with a project. Have to catch on the Internet.

al-Quaeda forms released-interesting ways of asking the very difficult questions

NSA-I am a big privacy person, personally. However, I know there are situations where personal privacy must be exchanged for personal or greater good. My question is, how is the monitoring, policing, prosecution, and legislation of those who must invade privacy practiced? If we can do it the right way, as in companies required to disclose when and where information is used and get permission (the way this is handled should also be changed).

Also to consider: people are a lot less guarded about giving their information when they're getting something in return. How to educate people that they need to stand up for themselves while making sure information users are held accountable.

Banks-So, I know I've used foreign currency exchange over the years. I'm wondering who the beneficiaries of this $5 billion penalty will be since I have no idea how to pursue a claim. In my case, the pain was minor, but hopefully those who would have suffered greater injury also kept better records. I think public/legal association is wise, but what are the statistics for deterrent? For how much can we ask? One step at a time.

ISIS-I am for national security and helping those in need/speaking up for those without a voice. I'm not sure about the best way to go about it. I also want to make sure that we don't override other cultures in favor of ours, because we've lost too much uniqueness already. If you're out there having a positive impact on the world, let's support you and not take over. If you're out there being bad (yes, in whose eyes, and it's very complicated), what are we doing to investigate and prevent innocent death/persecution? (This idea could count on high school campuses with bullying.)

Prime Minister Netanyahu's bus segregation-as we have an American example to look back on, we can reference that event. Since groups are already looking for ways to either take over or settle disputes, the impetus to begin discussions is not necessary. Restricting freedom of one party or another can often lead to violence. No wonder we thought it might not be the best idea.

Obama's grad speech to Coast Guard Academy (and the realization that government and policy is a wicked problem that should remain in constant flux as we implement (hopefully well-thought out, broad-based) solutions to public problems)-Climate change problems have been scientifically proven to exert influence past, present, and future.

Politicos and corporate leaders have reasons for pushing back against science about this and other issues. What's the first step toward change? Not only will powerful people have to change, but American culture, further complicating the discussion in an independently-(and sometimes lazily-)minded population.

Death penalty-traditionally thought it was a good idea until I started talking with people about it. Both because it is not classically a deterrent and because of human error, probably not a good idea, but I still struggle with cases of known violent crime and murder offenders for whom I feel lifelong imprisonment is not adequate nor viable.

Of the method, if we could solve the issues mentioned in this paragraph, I'm not sure that a silent sleep, denied to most human beings in other circumstances is fair either. I'm guessing something like if a criminal would admit to violent anger or if you're mentally ill, there are biological or societal reasons that might have prevented the criminal from committing a violent act for which society is responsible. Part of the reason I want to get into neurological music therapy.

-I think it'd be interesting if effective. It is sometimes difficult to change the course of a culture conditioned to certain negative habits. They might not want to go as extreme as Singapore's caning. I'm not familiar with how Japan does it.

Flatgate-boring and inconsistent

Takata-this should mean more to me than it does. Perhaps when I can afford a new car.

Chinese spies-this is a complex issue that I probably don't know enough about (RESEARCH).

Myanmar refugees-neat video; pray for them.

Raising the minimum wage-making people less desperate as a friend discusses.

Fraudulent cancer charities-shameless

Obama asking permission and inflexibility of discussion between him and Boehner (RESEARCH)-who is right? Is there a right?

ISIS, global warming, and bees-people may laugh, but these really are important issues. (RESEARCH) Which are the most important right now?

BB King died. I'm sad.
